The oak: a living matter.
There are more than 250 kinds of
"Quercus" known all over the world, but only few of them are chosen in
the barrel manufacture to get excellent wines.
The american oak,
Quercus alba, majestic appearance tree, right trunk and wide crown, is
one of our protagonists. Its woods stretches to several regions of the United
States: North Appalachian Mountains, Ohio, West-Virginia, Missouri....
In Europe, we find another kind of oak, suitable for the high quality wines
production and ageing process, the Quercus Petraea. France is the
geographic area having the biggest quantity of this kind of woods: Le
Forêt du Centre, Troncais, Allier et Nevers.
The wood of these
oaks is very hard, fine grain, well marked growth rings, dense and resistant.
It is a long life tree, which can surpass a thousand of years.
A deep
knowledge acquired throughout the years, provides us the experience to choose
the best examples. It is important the place where they live because they
determine the kind of grain and the bouquet the wood gives to the
wine.
